Weekday mornings at the corner of Courthouse Circle, coffee has come from a trailer. Lori Traficanti runs Sipping Sunshine Cafe as a mobile espresso bar in the parking lot of Blue Ridge Custom Homes on River Road. She opens at 7 a.m. and serves until 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. The cafe's website lists that spot as 2958 River Road West. In summer the menu ran to specials like a snickerdoodle latte and a s'mores mocha.
This fall the trailer is supposed to move indoors, a few doors down the same road. Richmond BizSense reported in August that it will be Goochland County's only dedicated, independent coffee shop. The paper said the only other dedicated coffee stop in the county is the Dunkin' at 2738 Fairground Road in the Goochland Square shopping center.
That matters more around the Courthouse than the size of the shop suggests. The county already puts its biggest public days in this small stretch along River Road West and Sandy Hook Road. What it hasn't had is a place to sit on a regular Tuesday.
Traficanti told BizSense that the lack of a coffee shop is a complaint she hears from customers, county leaders and local business owners. Her description of the problem was specific:
"There's not a dedicated coffee shop. … People want to have a place to meet for coffee … there are several restaurants (with coffee), and they're all lovely, but you're getting a full meal when you go in there."
She said the trailer has built a good customer base. She also said cold winters and hot summers can make a cart business unstable, which is why a permanent shop has been her goal.
The timing lines up with another change on the Courthouse calendar. The 2026 Goochland Farmers Market ran on Tuesdays from May through September, 4 to 6:30 p.m., at Goochland Courthouse, 1889 Sandy Hook Road, according to WRIC. That weekly evening gathering is over for the year. If the storefront opens on schedule, the Courthouse gets a weekday meeting place just as the market goes quiet for the colder months.
The new Sipping Sunshine Cafe is set for a 1,300-square-foot former boutique storefront in a small strip at 2913 River Road West. Its neighbors there are the Italian restaurant Bella Sicilia and Everett Insurance. Here is what the August report described:
As of early October, no opening day has been announced. Richmond Vibe's September 4 roundup still described the move to 2913 River Road West as a fall plan. The cafe's location page still lists weekday service at the Blue Ridge Custom Homes lot. Until that changes, the trailer is where you'll find coffee.
Look at where Goochland County's own fall and holiday events are held. Almost every one sits at one of two addresses near the Courthouse: Old GES Field at 3150 River Road West, just up the road from the future cafe, and the Goochland Sports Complex at 1800 Sandy Hook Road, which is the old high school.
| Date | Event | Time | Location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saturday, October 24 | Goochland County Fall Festival, free | 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. | Old GES Field, 3150 River Road West |
| Friday, October 30 | Trick or Treat at Admin | 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. | Goochland Sports Complex, 1800 Sandy Hook Road |
| Saturday, November 21 | Holiday Market, benefiting Goochland Christmas Mothers | 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. | Goochland Sports Complex, 1800 Sandy Hook Road |
| Friday, December 4 | Tree Lighting | 6:30 to 8 p.m. | Goochland Sports Complex, 1800 Sandy Hook Road |
Details for each are on the county calendar pages for the Fall Festival, Trick or Treat at Admin, the Holiday Market and the Tree Lighting.
Old GES Field has already been busy this season. The county held the Goochland Ag Fair there on September 12 and a free Slate River Band concert on September 25. The October 24 Fall Festival brings it back for one more Saturday before the holiday season moves to Sandy Hook Road.
Two of these events fall on Friday afternoons or evenings, and the Holiday Market is on a Saturday morning. None overlaps with the cafe's planned weekday hours. Trick or Treat at Admin ends at 4:30 p.m. on a Friday, an hour and a half after the storefront would close. This is where the new shop fits in. The county covers a handful of big days, and the cafe would cover the ordinary ones between them.
The county calendar isn't the only weekday option. Pamunkey Regional Library's Goochland Branch hosts "Let's Play Games!" for adults from noon to 3 p.m. on these Thursdays: October 29, November 5, November 12, November 19, December 3, December 10 and December 17. The full schedule is on the library's event page. Like the cafe's planned hours, it runs midday on a weekday and ends at 3 p.m.
Some of Goochland's best fall outings are farther out than the Courthouse.
Rassawek Vineyard's Autumn Festival is set for October 17 and 18, 2026. It will be the sixth annual festival, with a professional rodeo, antique machinery displays, live music, local food, handcrafted goods and demonstrations of traditional trades. The county's tourism calendar lists it from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days. The festival page still shows an older year in its browser title, but the page itself says 2026. It's the weekend before the county Fall Festival, so the two make back-to-back Saturdays.
Faithful Farms, at 2230 Sheppard Town Road in Maidens, offers U-pick flower fields with a $15 picking fee per person. It soft-launched its 2026 pumpkin patch during the county's Farm Tours on September 19, with pumpkins priced from $2 to $20 and free admission to the farm. The county page doesn't list October hours, so check with the farm before you drive out.
The same Farm Tours listing names a few other Goochland farms that opened to the public that day. They include Labyrinth Training Center on Forest Grove Road in Sandy Hook, Swine Knot animal sanctuary on Perkinsville Road in Maidens, and Crane & Clover Flower Farm in Columbia. Crane & Clover now hosts ceramics classes and workshops in its barn studio. They're worth knowing about for next year's tours, or for asking each farm about its own schedule.
Here's how the next two months look around the Courthouse:
If the cafe opens during that stretch, the first Friday in December could start with coffee at 2913 River Road West and end at the tree lighting on Sandy Hook Road.
A new coffee shop, a market season ending and the holiday dates on Sandy Hook Road are the kinds of small changes that shape what everyday life around the Courthouse feels like. If you're thinking about what Goochland's village center looks like from your own front porch, in English or Spanish, I'm happy to talk it through with you. Iris Hernandez is just a message away.
